Topeka artist Katya Strakova is continuing her work as an artist after graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) from Washburn University. She graduated in Fall of 2009 from Washburn and has recently begun the process of expanding her work to involve blown glass. Strakhova realizes that this medium takes a lot of skill and time to master but she hopes to incorporate it into her future work. She specializes in sculpture and ceramics and has been showing her work at galleries throughout the Topeka area for the past few years.
"I really like the hands on experience that you get with sculptures, I don't like painting because I feel like you're not doing enough physical work; I never feel like a painting is finished while with sculpture I feel like I get to that stage where I'm done with it," Strakhova said.
Her work is abstract and her sculptures are mainly composed of wood with some incorporation of fused glass. She is currently working on some fused glass pieces which include some bowls and plates that are planned for display at the Bottega for the First Friday art walk. Her piece "Red Army" can be seen at the Bottega Art Gallery located at 707 S.E. Quincy on the third floor in Topeka. Strakhova plans to continue and expand her work and to attend grad school in the near future.
