Topeka artist Katya Strakova is continuing her work as an artist after graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) from Washburn University. She graduated in Fall of 2009 from Washburn and has recently begun the process of expanding her work to involve blown glass. Strakhova realizes that this medium takes a lot of skill and time to master but she hopes to incorporate it into her future work. She specializes in sculpture and ceramics and has been showing her work at galleries throughout the Topeka area for the past few years.
"I really like the hands on experience that you get with sculptures, I don't like painting because I feel like you're not doing enough physical work; I never feel like a painting is finished while with sculpture I feel like I get to that stage where I'm done with it," Strakhova said. Her work is abstract and her sculptures are mainly composed of wood with some incorporation of fused glass. She is currently working on some fused glass pieces which include some bowls and plates that are planned for display at the Bottega for the First Friday art walk. Her piece "Red Army" can be seen at the Bottega Art Gallery located at 707 S.E. Quincy on the third floor in Topeka. Strakhova plans to continue and expand her work and to attend grad school in the near future. May 15th, 2012, 4:00pm, would officially mark the ribbon cutting and reopening of Penn Valley Skate Park in Kansas City, MO after it's recent expansion. The park also known as the Kansas City Skate Plaza, opened in late 2005 but remained incomplete due to funding until this year. Rob Dyrdek, professional skateboarder, Founder and President of Rob Dyrdek Foundation and Street League Skateboarding, donated $75,000 to complete the park. Also presenting and in attendance for the event were Mark L. McHenry, Director, Kansas City Missouri Parks and Recreation, Cindy Circo, Mayor Pro Tem, City of Kansas City, Missouri, and Jan Marcason, City Council, 4th District.
The park's new addition is comprised of obstacles used in last summer's Street League course held at the Sprint Center. The Rob Dyrdek Foundation founded in 2003, aims to strengthen communities by promoting and providing assistance to develop, design, and construct safe and legal Skate Plazas as well as educational programs to encourage and promote skateboarding. The Penn Valley Skate Plaza marks the tenth "Safe Spot Skate Spot", that the Rob Dyrdek Foundation has completed which creates a safe and legal place for skateboarders to ride. The Skate Park is located at W. 29th St. and Pennsylvania Avenue in Penn Valley Park, not far from Escapist Skate Shop, a local hot spot for skate gear. Dyrdek will be in Kansas City this week for the Street League DC Pro Tour at the Sprint Center May 18-19. For more information and tickets, visit www.streetleague.com. The image above illustrates the newly completed Penn Valley Skate Plaza's design. The Skate Park was originally built in 2005 but was left incomplete due to funding until this year. Today I was planing on helping my buddy Garrett from Show Stoppers Studios at a track meet but the meet was canceled because of bad weather. That's when we decided to get pizza and while we were eating I looked at the car he was driving and asked him if he wanted to do any filming. He had told me before that he wanted to get some footage of this car and today it just happened.
We went back to his shop where he switched out the tires. The we hit the road and started off filming on the main highway. Then we ended up broke down on some gravel road. Garrett popped the hood and messed with the battery cable and everything was good to go again. After that we headed out to the flint hills to get more footage. After all was said and done I decided to mess around with the trailer options in Imovie. It was fun and here is the result :) enjoy. |
